Sea-Fari Deep

Author: Nancy Woodman

Inspirational and informative...almost magical subject!
A new and refreshing type book from National Geographic ... about a mini-submarine journey to the recently discovered life around thermal vents. It's a busy book ... profusely illustrated in a creative style that uses photography, pastels and watercolors. My two children, who have some leaning toward science, love this story ... you can sense the enthusiasm of the author. The dive sequence is particularly priceless ... nice blend of images and story. I and my children give this book 5 stars ... and hope there are more of this type coming from National Geographic. And ... we all love Max ... the ugligator!

a creative, and imaginative view of an unknown world, joyful
This book is a treat to behold. The vividness of the imagery is breathtaking. The author is certainly state of the art and brilliant as she weaves together all of the newest in media. This book must have taken her a terribly long time to create. She does such an excellent job of explaining technically difficult material to all, including youth. Her scrapbook-diary format gives the reader the feeling that they have accompanied her. It is whimsical, serious, artistic and soundly scientific all in one. BRAVO

Sierra: A Novel of the California Gold Rush
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Forge (August, 1998)
Author: Richard S. Wheeler
Average review score:

Read it! The Sierra's have so much to offer...
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in historical events, especially those of our wild west frontier!

Although this is a fictional story, I believe every word to be true for some gold prospector years ago.

The author does an excellent job keeping the pace moving and allowing you to turn page after page without hesitation.

Don't expect to put it down after reading it! It is that good and has a very redeemable story line. Read what some of the family member went through in search for gold.

Gold can be mined from the heart as well as the earth.
Richard S. Wheeler writes a tale of love and adventure in the Sierra Mountains. With the tools of a poet and the knowledge of a historian, he spins a tale of the Old West and the contemporary heart.

The Silicon Valley Edge: A Habitat for Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (November, 1900)
Authors: Chong-Moon Lee, William F. Miller, Marguerite Gong Hancock, and Henry S. Rowen
Average review score:

Excellent guidebook to Silicon Valley
This is an excellent book to describe all thinkable crosssections of Silicon Valley through interviews in the social science methods and through writing by prominent figures in Silicon Valley. The only drawback I found is that the book has too rich contents for a reader to read through casually. I strongly recommend this book to those serious readers who are engaged in Silicon Valley, associated with venture businesses, interested in mechanisms and histories of Silicon Valley, or interested in business models.
The book has a big reference table to illustrate how different Silicon Valley entrepreneurs are from small business owners and traditional entrepreneurs, and describes four distinct types of entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley. The book also enumerates ten reasons why Silicon Valley has been prosperous.
This is really a good book for a reader to learn what Silicon Valley is like.

A Fantastic Book with Intensive Stuffs
Practically useful for entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and professionals.

Simi Valley : a journey through time

Simi Valley: A Journey Through Time
A rich source of information. Brimming with factual data, stories, and maps-from the indian occupation through the building boom that continues today. Beautiful photographs generously splashed throughout enhance the journey. Wish it had more pages.

Open The Cover and Hang On! This Is A Rich Trip!
After reading this book, one will realize that Simi Valley is not "just another place" in California. It is a city rich in history...from the Indians (where did the name "Simi Valley" come from?) through the Spanish occupation (how did they acquire this land?) followed by the great ranchers and farmers who finally gave way to the developers who made it the sprawling community it is today. A 'must read' for historians and residents alike. A story that truly reflects the time, energy, and factual intent that can only result in this wonderful "Journey Through Time." It is presented with warmth and sensitivity - preserving our ability to "feel the moments" recalled by many pioneers. The stories, photographs, and technical data make it stand out as a most accurate (and often amusing) journey that one can take from the comfort of a big reading chair. Kudos to Pat Havens, Bill Appleton, and all who participated in this endeavor!

Simply Healthy: Over 250 Lowfat Recipes Rich in the Antioxidant Vitamins That Keep You Healthy

Healthy Gourmet, No Longer an Oxymoron
This cookbook is full of delicious, unusual, and healthy food. The recipies do require some knowledge of cooking and a restocking of your shelves. I tend to plan the meals for a week, making out the grocery list from the list of ingredients for each meal. Wear your sun glasses for this trip to the grocery store, your basket will be glowing with orange, yellow, red and green items. Stick with using this book exclusively for a month and you will never think the same about food. I found that cooking and eating delicious food to be the best instruction in what constitutes a healthy diet.

Its all here...
Looking for one magic cook book? Simply Healthy seems to have it all. Almost every one of the recipes has turned out to be a winner. Quick prep time too. My wife and I love this book! Watch out for the pasta... its delicious!

Sip In Sonoma

What a deal!
By reading the book I've finally found out what all the wine lingo means, and I have a better idea of where I should go. When I make my trip to Sonoma I know I'll save lots of bucks with the great coupons.

The book is essentially free!
The coupons in the back of the book are well-worth the purchase. Not only is the book packed-full of useful wine country information, you get coupons for free wine tasting, free wine, and great discounts. I used a coupon at Korbel and received 25% off of my purchase for a champagne that is only sold at Korbel and through their wine club. Get the book -- the coupons will pay you back many times over!

Unquestionably the best book on its subject

Smart Trust Deed Investment in California
For the person who is interested in really learning how to invest in Trust Deeds, this is without a doubt the best guide you will ever find. George Coats' coverage of this subject is very thourough and complete. I have been investing in trust deeds for some years, and luckely found this book shortly after it was written. It has been my bible ever since. The laws may be somewhat different in other states, but the principals and guidelines he provides are wonderfull. This book has helped me to avoid may pitfalls in making private loans. Required reading for anyone interested in this subject.

South Bay Trails: Outdoor Adventures in & Around Santa Clara Valley: From the Diablo Range to the Pacific Ocean
Published in Paperback by Wilderness Press (November, 2001)
Authors: Jean Rusmore, Frances Spangle, and Betsy Crowder
Average review score:

Almost as fun as the hikes themselves!
This is a wonderful book that goes into great deatil about the many trails in and around the South Bay. It breaks down the area by specific parks and then suggested hikes, including mileage, elevation loss or gain, and time. It even has a neat little appendix outlining hikes by category (ie., short hikes, hikes to see spring flowers, etc.) The text is detailed, explaining what you will find around every bend, and the historical information on the parks is very interesting. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get out and away from the hustle and bustle of Silicon Valley.

A good book made better
I just replaced my battered copy of the first edition with the latest, third one, and it's a real winner! These authors' books are always educational, interesting and complete. And best of all they lead one into many fine hiking adventures around the bay. I've spent many a fine summer day following their instructions. It's about time they put out a new edition, because of all the new parks and trails they had to cover. Recommended!

Southern California Guide

The Best
I live in Los Angeles and find this book excellent for locals. I have used this book when out of towners pop in for a visit. It lists great places to eat..interesting tid-bits that I would have not known. I have a friend who is moving out here from NYC and bought him the book. He can't wait to be in LA to explore some of the sites listed. A GREAT GUIDE!

Southern California Guide
This is the most comprehensive travel guide that I have ever read and by far, the most interesting. Incidentally, the guide is 754 pages, not 448 pages, as listed by Amazon. What makes the 'Southern California Guide' different, is that the tourist learns something about the place that he is visiting. For example: The story of Winston Churchill and his connection with the Queen Mary. Example: How the famous restaurant, The Brown Derby, came into existance. There are about 200 sidebars in this guide, all interesting and helpful. There is not one restaurant, hotel, motel, entertainment venue, sports venue, shopping area or anything else of importance to the tourist, that is not covered in this book. The author is very candid about the establishments listed in this book and is not afraid to give you her opinion of same, good and bad. Last but not least, the tourist will find many, many, out of the way places listed in this guide that you will not find in any other travel guide. I unequivocally recommend this travel book as the very best that has ever been written about the Southern California Area.
